Early September in Acapulco means 28--31 C (82--88 F) with high humidity (77%) and frequent afternoon rain showers. The venue is air-conditioned, but the heat and humidity will affect you before and after the race. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing and drink far more water than you think you need.

The Venue: Expo Mundo Imperial

Expo Mundo Imperial is one of the most modern and sophisticated convention and entertainment complexes in Latin America. Located in the heart of the Acapulco Diamante zone, it offers world-class facilities for large-scale events. The venue is part of the larger Mundo Imperial resort complex, which includes three hotels, a forum for concerts, and an arena.

What's nearby:

  • Palacio Mundo Imperial -- on-site. The resort's flagship all-inclusive hotel, directly adjacent to the expo halls
  • La Isla Shopping Village -- 700 m walk. Open-air shopping centre with restaurants, bars, and stores (note: undergoing post-hurricane restoration)
  • Playa Revolcadero -- 2 km. Long Pacific beach with surfing waves and beachfront restaurants
  • General Juan N. Alvarez International Airport (ACA) -- 2 km. One of the shortest airport-to-venue distances on the entire HYROX calendar

Important: September is peak rainy season in Acapulco. Expect afternoon thunderstorms most days. They're typically short and intense -- plan your outdoor activities for the morning.

Where to Stay

Acapulco Diamante is a purpose-built resort zone, so accommodation is concentrated around the venue. All three hotels below are within 5 km of the expo halls. Prices are significantly lower than US or European HYROX destinations -- expect to pay a fraction of what you'd spend in London or Paris for comparable quality.

Where to Eat

At the Resorts

The Mundo Imperial all-inclusive resorts have extensive dining -- you may never need to leave the complex. Palacio Mundo Imperial alone has seven restaurants: Mizumi (seafood), Marche (international buffet), Cantina La Barrita de en Medio (Mexican), plus Italian, grilled meats, and casual options.

Near the Venue

SHU Acapulco -- Japanese-international fusion with teppanyaki as the centrepiece. Creative plates, fresh Pacific seafood, and an upscale atmosphere.

Carlos'n Charlie's -- the classic Mexican chain, 500 m from Mundo Imperial. Lively atmosphere, generous portions, good for groups celebrating after the race.

Mexican & Acapulco Food to Try

  • Ceviche acapulqueno -- fresh Pacific fish cured in lime juice with tomato, onion, chilli, and cilantro. Acapulco's signature dish -- try it at beachfront restaurants
  • Pozole -- hearty hominy corn stew with pork or chicken, topped with shredded cabbage, radish, oregano, and lime. The traditional dish of Guerrero state
  • Tacos al pastor -- spit-roasted pork with pineapple, cilantro, and salsa. Available everywhere from street stalls to restaurants
  • Pescado a la talla -- whole fish butterflied and grilled over charcoal, rubbed with a red chilli paste. A Guerrero specialty
  • Agua fresca -- fresh blended fruit water (jamaica/hibiscus, horchata, tamarindo). Perfect for hydration in the heat

Budget eating: Taco stands and local fondas (small family restaurants) serve full meals for 60--120 MXN ($3--7 USD). The Mercado Central in old Acapulco is worth a visit for authentic, cheap eats. Supermarkets (Soriana, Walmart) have prepared food sections.

Essential Acapulco Tips

Currency. Mexican Peso (MXN). As of 2026, approximately 1 USD = 17--18 MXN. Prices listed with "$" in Mexico are pesos, not US dollars.

Cash vs card. Cards accepted at hotels, resorts, and larger restaurants. Carry cash (pesos) for taxis, street food, tips, and smaller establishments. Use ATMs inside banks for the best exchange rates -- avoid street money changers.

Tipping. 10--15% at sit-down restaurants. Check your bill -- some tourist-area restaurants add a service charge automatically (this is technically illegal in Mexico, but it happens). Tip in pesos, not USD. $20--50 MXN for hotel porters.

Language. Spanish. English is widely understood at resorts and tourist-facing businesses in Diamante. Basic Spanish phrases will be appreciated everywhere else.

Weather in September. Daytime highs 28--31 C (82--88 F), nighttime lows 24--25 C (75--77 F). Humidity around 77%. Rainy season -- expect short, heavy afternoon downpours most days, but mornings are typically sunny. Sea temperature ~30 C. Pack: sunscreen, insect repellent, lightweight rain jacket, breathable clothing.

Safety. Stay in the Diamante resort zone and the tourist corridor along the Costera. The resort areas have a strong police and security presence. Use hotel-arranged taxis rather than hailing on the street. Do not venture into non-tourist areas. The US State Department maintains a travel advisory for Guerrero state -- check current guidance before travelling.

What to See

  • La Quebrada Cliff Divers -- Acapulco's most iconic attraction since 1934. Watch divers plunge 41 metres (136 ft) into a narrow ocean inlet. Evening shows feature flaming torches. ~30 minutes from Diamante. Admission ~$3 USD
  • Playa Revolcadero -- long Pacific beach near the venue with powerful surf waves. Great for a morning run or recovery walk. Several beachfront restaurants
  • Fort of San Diego (Fuerte de San Diego) -- 17th-century star-shaped fortress now housing the Acapulco Historical Museum. Fascinating colonial and trade history. In old Acapulco, ~30 minutes from Diamante
  • Isla de la Roqueta -- small island accessible by glass-bottom boat from Playa Caleta. Snorkelling, beach, and an underwater Virgin of Guadalupe statue. Half-day trip
  • La Costera (Costera Miguel Aleman) -- Acapulco's famous oceanfront boulevard. Lined with restaurants, bars, and views of the bay. Best experienced in the evening
  • Pie de la Cuesta -- laid-back beach and lagoon area 30 minutes northwest. Famous for spectacular Pacific sunsets. A quieter alternative to the main tourist beaches

Acapulco rewards early mornings -- beat the heat and the afternoon rain by starting activities before 10 AM. The sunsets here are extraordinary.
