November is the start of Rio's summer. Expect daytime highs of 28–30°C (82–86°F), humidity around 75–82%, and a chance of afternoon showers. Hydration is critical — the venue is indoors but the warm, humid air carries into the building.

The Venue: Riocentro Convention & Events Center

Riocentro is the largest exhibition and convention complex in Latin America, with over 100,000 square metres of event space. Originally built for the 1992 Earth Summit and used during the 2016 Rio Olympics, the venue's vast, column-free halls provide more than enough room for the full HYROX course.

What's nearby:

  • Olympic Park — 2 km east, home to the Olympic Aquatics Center and Velodrome
  • Barra Shopping — one of South America's largest malls, 5 km east
  • Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach — 4 km southwest, a quieter alternative to Copacabana
  • Village Mall — upscale shopping and dining, 8 km east

Important: Riocentro is in western Barra da Tijuca, roughly 40 km from Copacabana and the traditional tourist center. Stay in Barra da Tijuca to avoid a potential 60+ minute drive on race morning.

Where to Stay

All three hotels are in Barra da Tijuca, keeping your race-day commute short. The Residence Inn and Courtyard are directly adjacent to the Olympic Park complex, roughly 2 km from Riocentro. The Grand Hyatt sits on the beachfront, about 6 km from the venue.

Where to Eat

Barra Shopping — Dozens of options from açaí bowls to grilled meats. Open late and easy to reach.

Village Mall — Higher-end dining including Japanese, Italian, and contemporary Brazilian.

Rio Food to Try

  • Açaí na tigela — Frozen açaí berry bowl topped with granola and banana. The ultimate athlete fuel and a Rio staple
  • Pão de queijo — Cheesy bread rolls made with tapioca flour. Gluten-free, portable, and addictive
  • Feijoada — Brazil's national dish: rich black bean stew with pork, served with rice, collard greens, and farofa. Save this for post-race
  • Água de coco — Fresh coconut water, sold from green coconuts at every beach kiosk. The best natural electrolyte drink
  • Churrasco — Brazilian barbecue. Hit a rodízio (all-you-can-eat) steakhouse for the ultimate post-race protein reload

Budget eating: "Por quilo" restaurants are everywhere — serve yourself from a buffet and pay by weight. Typically R$50–80 for a generous, balanced meal.

Essential Rio Tips

Currency. Brazilian Real (BRL/R$). 1 USD ≈ 5.0–5.5 R$.

Cash vs card. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) accepted at hotels, malls, and restaurants. Carry cash for street vendors, smaller shops, and beach kiosks.

Tipping. Most restaurants add a 10% service charge ("taxa de serviço") to the bill. It's optional but customary to pay it.

Language. Portuguese. English is limited outside tourist hotels. Download Google Translate with the Portuguese offline pack. Key: "Obrigado/Obrigada" (thank you), "Quanto custa?" (how much?).

Weather in November. Hot and humid (28–30°C). Afternoon thunderstorms are common but brief. Pack sunscreen (SPF 50+) and a light rain jacket.

Power. Brazil uses Type N plugs (three round pins) and 127V or 220V. Bring a universal adapter.

Safety. Barra da Tijuca is one of Rio's safest neighbourhoods. Use Uber/99 rather than hailing street taxis. Keep a photocopy of your passport and leave the original in your hotel safe.

What to See

  • Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) — The 30-metre statue atop Corcovado mountain. Take the cog train from Cosme Velho. Go early to beat the crowds
  • Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) — Two cable-car rides to the summit for a 360-degree panorama. Sunset is unforgettable
  • Copacabana and Ipanema beaches — Iconic stretches of sand roughly 30 km east of Barra da Tijuca. Worth the trip for the atmosphere
  • Escadaria Selarón — Colorful mosaic staircase in Lapa. One of Rio's most photographed spots
  • Tijuca National Park — The world's largest urban rainforest. Hike to Pico da Tijuca for panoramic views
  • Maracanã Stadium — One of football's most legendary venues. Stadium tours run daily
