HYROX Bangkok brings the race to Southeast Asia's most electrifying city. The IMPACT Arena & Exhibition Center is located in Muang Thong Thani, a large development about 25 km north of central Bangkok. August falls in the middle of the rainy season, but the race is indoors and rain usually comes in short, intense afternoon bursts. Outside the venue, Bangkok offers some of the best street food on the planet, ornate temples, rooftop bars with skyline views, and a cost of living that means you can eat world-class food for a few dollars. This is one of the best-value HYROX travel destinations anywhere.

Mid-August in Bangkok means temperatures between 26°C and 33°C (79—91°F). Hot, humid, and rainy season — expect daily afternoon showers that are heavy but usually brief. The race is indoors, so rain won't affect competition, but carry an umbrella for getting around the city.

The Venue: IMPACT Arena & Exhibition Center

IMPACT is one of Southeast Asia's largest convention and exhibition complexes, with over 140,000 sqm of event space including the 12,000-seat IMPACT Arena and multiple exhibition halls. It's located in Muang Thong Thani, a large planned community in Nonthaburi province, just north of Bangkok.

What's nearby:

  • IMPACT Lakeside — a large lake with restaurants and walking paths directly adjacent to the venue
  • Muang Thong Thani food courts — affordable Thai food stalls within the development
  • Government Complex — Thailand's central government offices are in the same area
  • SCB Park — a modern park and commercial area nearby
  • Central Westgate — a large shopping mall about 15 minutes by taxi with restaurants, shops, and a cinema

Where to Stay

The IMPACT venue is in Muang Thong Thani, north of central Bangkok. Two hotels are directly connected to the venue — by far the most convenient for race day. Staying in central Bangkok (Sukhumvit, Silom, or Siam) gives you better nightlife and sightseeing but adds 30—60 minutes of travel to the venue.

4-star hotel directly connected to the IMPACT complex via covered walkway. Outdoor pool, fitness centre, spa, and restaurant. You can walk to the venue in under 5 minutes without going outside. The most convenient choice for race day — no traffic, no transport stress.

3-star hotel also connected to the IMPACT complex, next to the Novotel. Clean, modern rooms at a lower price point. Restaurant and small fitness area. Same covered walkway access to the venue. The smart choice if you want venue-adjacent convenience without the premium.

Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao — City Comfort with Easy Access

About 20 minutes by taxi to IMPACT. A great option if you want to stay closer to central Bangkok's restaurants and nightlife while keeping travel to the venue manageable.

Getting There

From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok's main international airport, about 40 km southeast of the IMPACT venue.

OptionTimeCostNotes
Taxi (meter)45—75 min฿400—600 (~$11—17)Tell driver "IMPACT Muang Thong Thani." Insist on meter. Add ฿50 airport surcharge + tolls
Grab45—75 min฿350—600 (~$10—17)Southeast Asia's Uber. Set destination in the app. Most reliable option
Airport Rail Link + taxi~60 min฿200—350 (~$6—10)ARL to Makkasan/Phaya Thai, then taxi or Grab to IMPACT

Bangkok traffic can be severe, especially during rush hours (7—9 AM, 4—7 PM). Allow extra time. The journey from BKK to IMPACT can take over 90 minutes in bad traffic.

From Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Don Mueang handles budget airlines (AirAsia, Nok Air, etc.) and is closer to IMPACT — about 15 km.

OptionTimeCostNotes
Taxi20—40 min฿150—300 (~$4—8)Much closer than Suvarnabhumi
Grab20—40 min฿120—250 (~$3—7)Best option from DMK

Public Transport

Bangkok has an extensive BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro system, but IMPACT is not directly on the rail network. You'll need a taxi or Grab for the last stretch.

TicketPrice
BTS Skytrain (single ride)฿17—62 (~$0.50—1.80)
MRT Metro (single ride)฿17—42 (~$0.50—1.20)
Rabbit card (BTS rechargeable)฿200 (~$5.70, includes ฿100 credit)

BTS and MRT are the best way to get around central Bangkok and avoid traffic. For IMPACT, take the BTS to Mo Chit or MRT to Chatuchak and then a short Grab ride.

Where to Eat

Muang Thong Thani — the area around IMPACT has food courts and local restaurants. Nothing spectacular, but convenient and extremely cheap.

Sukhumvit Road — Bangkok's main international dining strip. Soi 11, Soi 38, and Thong Lo are packed with restaurants, from street stalls to fine dining. About 30—45 minutes from IMPACT by taxi.

Chinatown (Yaowarat) — one of the world's great street food strips. Go after dark when the neon signs light up and the woks come out.

Bangkok Food to Try

  • Pad thai — stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp, tofu, bean sprouts, and peanuts. Best from street vendors, not tourist restaurants. Try Thip Samai on Maha Chai Road
  • Som tum — green papaya salad pounded in a mortar with chilli, lime, fish sauce, and peanuts. Ask for "mai pet" (not spicy) if you can't handle the heat
  • Khao man gai — Hainanese-style chicken rice. Simple, perfect, and available everywhere. One of the best recovery meals
  • Massaman curry — rich, fragrant curry with potatoes, peanuts, and slow-cooked beef or chicken. Milder than green or red curry
  • Mango sticky rice — the quintessential Thai dessert. Sweet coconut sticky rice with fresh mango. Available from street vendors everywhere in season
  • Boat noodles — small, intensely flavoured bowls of noodle soup, traditionally sold from canal boats. Found at Victory Monument and scattered around the city

Budget eating: Bangkok is one of the cheapest cities in the world for excellent food. Street food meals cost ฿40—80 ($1—2.30). Food court meals at shopping malls cost ฿50—100 ($1.40—2.85). You can eat extraordinarily well for under ฿300 ($8.50) per day.

Essential Bangkok Tips

Currency. Thai Baht (THB/฿).

Cash vs card. Cards are accepted at hotels, malls, and larger restaurants. Street food, markets, taxis, and smaller shops are cash-only. ATMs are everywhere but charge ฿220 (~$6.30) per foreign withdrawal. Bring some cash and withdraw in larger amounts to reduce fees.

Tipping. Not traditionally expected in Thailand. Rounding up the bill or leaving ฿20—50 at restaurants is appreciated but not required. No need to tip taxi drivers.

Language. Thai. English is spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and some restaurants, but less than you might expect. Google Translate is useful. Learn "khop khun" (thank you — khrap for men, kha for women) and "sawasdee" (hello).

Weather in mid-August. Highs around 33°C (91°F), lows around 26°C (79°F). Very hot and humid. Rainy season — expect heavy afternoon downpours that last 30—60 minutes, then clear. Carry a compact umbrella. Drink water constantly.

Safety. Bangkok is generally safe. Watch for common tourist scams — tuk-tuk drivers suggesting "special" temples or gem shops, overly friendly strangers near the Grand Palace. Use Grab instead of negotiating with tuk-tuks. Avoid unlicensed taxis.

What to See

  • Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew — the dazzling former royal residence and Thailand's most sacred Buddhist temple. Dress code enforced (long trousers, covered shoulders)
  • Wat Arun — the Temple of Dawn on the Chao Phraya River. Climb the steep central tower for stunning views. Best photographed from the opposite bank at sunset
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market — one of the world's largest outdoor markets with over 15,000 stalls. Open Saturday and Sunday. Go early to beat the heat
  • Chinatown (Yaowarat) — neon-lit street food paradise after dark. Walk Yaowarat Road and eat everything
  • Rooftop bars — Bangkok's skyline is spectacular. Sky Bar at Lebua (from "The Hangover"), Octave at the Marriott Sukhumvit, or Vertigo at the Banyan Tree
  • Jim Thompson House — the beautifully preserved Thai-style home of the American silk trader who revived the Thai silk industry, then mysteriously vanished
