HYROX Beijing takes you to one of the world's most historic capitals. The venue is the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in the Olympic Park district — the same area that hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Bird's Nest stadium and Water Cube are right next door. Beijing combines ancient imperial history with modern megacity energy, and the food scene is extraordinary.

Mid-September in Beijing means temperatures between 16°C and 28°C (61–82°F). Warm and mostly dry — the tail end of summer. Comfortable for racing and sightseeing. Air quality varies.


The Venue: China National Convention Center

The CNCC is one of Asia's largest convention centres — over 270,000 sqm of event space in the Olympic Park district of Chaoyang. It hosted events during the 2008 Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics.

  • Olympic Green metro station — Line 8 and Line 15, directly at the venue

  • Central Beijing — Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City are about 30 minutes by metro

Important: The Olympic Park area has several hotels within walking distance. It's well connected by metro to central Beijing, making it easy to combine race-day convenience with sightseeing.

The Olympic Park area has a cluster of international hotels within walking distance of the CNCC. Alternatively, stay near Wangfujing or Sanlitun for more nightlife and dining options — both are 20–30 minutes by metro.

5-star hotel directly adjacent to the CNCC. 333 rooms, indoor pool, spa, multiple restaurants, and views over the Olympic Park. Walk to the venue in 3 minutes. The obvious race-day pick.

CNCC Grand Hotel — Connected to Venue

5-star hotel connected to the CNCC via indoor corridor — 420 rooms, restaurant, business centre, and meeting facilities. Walk to the race floor without stepping outside. The most seamless race-day option alongside the InterContinental.

Holiday Inn Express Beijing Huacai — Budget Option

3-star hotel near the Olympic Park area with modern rooms, free breakfast, and good metro access. About 15 minutes from the venue. The best value option in the area.

Beijing Capital is about 25 km northeast of the venue.

From Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX)

Daxing is the newer airport, about 55 km south. Allow 60–90 minutes by Daxing Express + metro. A taxi costs ¥200–250 (~$28–35).

Beijing's metro is run by Beijing Subway — one of the world's largest networks with 27 lines.

Buy a Yikatong card at any station or use Alipay/WeChat Pay on your phone. The venue is at Olympic Green station (Lines 8 and 15).


Where to Eat

Wangfujing Street — Beijing's most famous shopping and food street. Night food market with street snacks, plus restaurants ranging from cheap to upscale. About 25 minutes by metro.

Sanlitun — expat and nightlife district with international restaurants, craft beer bars, and upscale dining. Modern and cosmopolitan.

Beijing Food to Try

  • Peking duck — Beijing's signature dish. Crispy-skinned roast duck carved tableside, wrapped in thin pancakes with spring onion and hoisin sauce. Da Dong and Quanjude are famous spots
  • Jianbing — savoury breakfast crepe made on a griddle with egg, crispy wonton, spring onion, and chilli sauce. Ubiquitous street food, best from morning vendors
  • Zhajiangmian — thick wheat noodles with fermented soybean paste, minced pork, and julienned vegetables. A Beijing staple
  • Hot pot — communal pot of simmering broth where you cook your own meat, vegetables, and noodles. Beijing-style uses a copper pot with a chimney
  • Tanghulu — candied hawthorn berries on a stick. A classic Beijing street snack

Budget eating: Street food and small restaurants serve filling meals for ¥20–40 (~$3–6). University canteens near Peking University offer cheap meals. Supermarkets and convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) are everywhere.


Essential Beijing Tips

Currency. Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY/¥). 1 USD ≈ 7.10 ¥, 1 EUR ≈ 7.80 ¥.

Cash vs card. China runs on mobile payment (Alipay and WeChat Pay). International credit cards are increasingly accepted at hotels and large restaurants, but many small shops and restaurants are mobile-only. Set up Alipay before you arrive — it now supports international cards.

Tipping. Not expected and not customary in China.

Language. Mandarin Chinese. English is limited outside international hotels and tourist areas. Download a translation app. Xièxiè (sheh-sheh) means "thank you."

Weather in mid-September. Highs around 28°C (82°F), lows around 16°C (61°F). Warm and mostly dry. Bring light layers and sunscreen.

VPN. Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, and many Western apps are blocked in China. Download a VPN before you arrive.

Safety. Beijing is very safe. Petty crime is rare. Standard precautions apply.

  • Forbidden City — the world's largest palace complex, home to 24 emperors over 500 years. Book tickets online in advance
  • Great Wall — the Mutianyu section is the most popular from Beijing (90 minutes by car). Cable car available. A must-do day trip
  • Temple of Heaven — stunning 15th-century temple complex where emperors prayed for good harvests. Beautiful parkland
  • Summer Palace — imperial garden and lake complex northwest of the city. Kunming Lake and the Long Corridor
  • Tiananmen Square — the world's largest public square, adjacent to the Forbidden City
  • 798 Art District — former factory complex turned contemporary art hub. Galleries, cafes, and street art
