HYROX Delhi brings the race to one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Pragati Maidan sits in the heart of New Delhi, connected by the new Pragati Maidan metro station and surrounded by centuries of Mughal, colonial, and modern Indian history. Late July is monsoon season — expect heat, humidity, and dramatic afternoon rains — but indoors you'll be racing in climate-controlled comfort. Delhi's street food, Mughal monuments, and sheer energy make this one of the most immersive HYROX weekends anywhere.

Late July in Delhi is peak monsoon: highs around 35--38°C (95--100°F), lows around 27°C (81°F), with high humidity and frequent heavy rain. The venue is air-conditioned. Bring light, quick-dry clothing and a compact umbrella. Stay hydrated and allow extra travel time during downpours.

The Venue: Pragati Maidan

Pragati Maidan is India's largest exhibition complex, spread across 150 acres in central New Delhi. The recently redeveloped ITPO Convention Centre features the massive International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC), a modern facility with world-class infrastructure completed in 2023. Its central location makes it one of the most accessible HYROX venues in Asia.

What's nearby:

  • India Gate — the iconic war memorial and surrounding lawns, about 3 km west. A Delhi landmark
  • Purana Qila (Old Fort) — 16th-century Mughal fort and lake directly adjacent to Pragati Maidan. Walk there in 5 minutes
  • National Zoological Park — Delhi Zoo borders Pragati Maidan to the south
  • Khan Market — upscale shopping and dining district, about 3 km south. One of Delhi's best areas for restaurants and cafes

Where to Stay

Pragati Maidan is in central New Delhi, but the immediate vicinity is more institutional than hotel-friendly. The best strategy is to stay in Aerocity (near the airport, with a cluster of international hotels on the metro line) or in central Delhi near Connaught Place. Both are connected to Pragati Maidan by metro.

Getting There

From Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

Delhi's airport is approximately 18 km southwest of Pragati Maidan. Terminal 3 handles most international flights.

OptionTimeCostNotes
Airport Express Metro~45 min (with transfer)INR 60Express to New Delhi, transfer to Blue Line to Pragati Maidan station
Uber/Ola~40--60 minINR 500--900Traffic dependent, especially during monsoon
Prepaid Taxi~40--60 minINR 600--1,000Book at official counter inside arrivals

The Airport Express Metro runs every 10--15 minutes and is the most reliable option — Delhi traffic, especially during monsoon rains, can be severe. The new Pragati Maidan metro station (Blue Line) provides a direct stop at the venue.

Public Transport

Delhi Metro is one of the best urban rail systems in Asia — clean, fast, affordable, and extensive. It's by far the best way to get around Delhi.

TicketPrice
Metro single rideINR 10--60 (distance-based)
Metro tourist card (1 day)INR 200 (includes INR 50 deposit)
Metro tourist card (3 days)INR 500 (includes INR 50 deposit)
Auto-rickshaw (short ride)INR 30--100

Use the Delhi Metro app for route planning. Uber and Ola (India's ride-hailing apps) work well and are affordable. Auto-rickshaws are everywhere — agree on a fare before you get in, or insist on the meter.

Where to Eat

Chandni Chowk (Old Delhi) — the legendary street food district, operating since the 17th century. Narrow lanes packed with food stalls, sweet shops, and spice markets. Take the metro to Chandni Chowk station. This is one of the greatest street food experiences in the world.

Khan Market — upscale dining district about 3 km from Pragati Maidan with international restaurants, cafes, and bakeries. Good for a sit-down meal after the race.

Connaught Place — the circular commercial heart of New Delhi with restaurants ranging from budget to fine dining. About 4 km from the venue.

Delhi Food to Try

  • Chole bhature — spicy chickpea curry served with deep-fried puffed bread. Delhi's favourite breakfast, available at stalls and restaurants across the city
  • Butter chicken (murgh makhani) — invented in Delhi at Moti Mahal in the 1950s. Tender tandoori chicken in a rich, creamy tomato sauce. Order it with naan
  • Parantha — stuffed, pan-fried flatbread. Paranthe Wali Gali in Chandni Chowk has been serving them since the 1870s. Try aloo (potato), paneer, or mixed fillings
  • Chaat — tangy, spicy, sweet street snacks. Golgappa (crispy shells filled with spiced water), aloo tikki (potato patties), and dahi bhalla (lentil dumplings in yoghurt) are essential
  • Kebabs — seekh kebabs, galouti kebabs, and tandoori meats from the Muslim quarter around Jama Masjid. Some of India's finest grilled meats
  • Kulfi falooda — dense, slow-churned Indian ice cream with rose-flavoured vermicelli and basil seeds. The perfect Delhi dessert

Budget eating: Street food in Chandni Chowk costs INR 30--100 per item. Thali meals (a complete plate with rice, dal, vegetables, bread, and dessert) at local restaurants cost INR 150--300. Delhi is one of the most affordable food cities in the world.

Essential Delhi Tips

Currency. Indian Rupee (INR / Rs).

Cash vs card. Cards are accepted at hotels, malls, and upscale restaurants. Street food, auto-rickshaws, and smaller shops are cash-only. Carry INR 2,000--3,000 in small denominations. ATMs are everywhere.

Tipping. Tip 10% at sit-down restaurants if a service charge is not included. Round up taxi fares. Tip hotel porters INR 50--100.

Language. Hindi and English. English is widely understood in hotels, restaurants, and by Uber/Ola drivers (via the app). Signs are in Hindi and English. You'll manage fine with English in tourist areas.

Weather in late July. Peak monsoon: 27--38°C (81--100°F), very high humidity. Expect heavy afternoon and evening rain, sometimes for hours. Roads can flood. The metro is far more reliable than road transport during downpours. Bring waterproof footwear and a rain jacket.

Safety. Central Delhi and tourist areas are generally safe. Use Uber/Ola rather than hailing taxis at night. Drink only bottled or filtered water. Avoid tap water and ice from street vendors. Use mosquito repellent — monsoon season brings mosquitoes.

What to See

  • Red Fort (Lal Qila) — the massive 17th-century Mughal fort in Old Delhi. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Audio guides available. Allow 2--3 hours
  • Humayun's Tomb — the stunning Mughal garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal. About 3 km from Pragati Maidan. UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Qutub Minar — the 73-metre victory tower dating to 1193, surrounded by ruins from Delhi's earliest sultanates. South Delhi, about 40 minutes by metro
  • Chandni Chowk — Old Delhi's main bazaar. Walk through the spice market (Khari Baoli), the silver market, and the food lanes. Overwhelming and unforgettable
  • Jama Masjid — India's largest mosque, built by Shah Jahan in 1656. Climb the minaret for panoramic views of Old Delhi
  • Lodhi Garden — a peaceful park with 15th-century tombs scattered among manicured gardens. Popular with joggers. Ideal for a recovery run
