HYROX Düsseldorf makes history — this is the first HYROX event ever held inside a football stadium. The Merkur Spiel-Arena, home of Fortuna Düsseldorf, replaces the usual exhibition hall format with stadium energy, bigger crowds, and a completely different atmosphere. Add in Düsseldorf's famous Altstadt (Old Town) — the "longest bar in the world" — and one of Germany's most stylish cities, and this is a race weekend with serious appeal.

VenueMerkur Spiel-Arena
AddressArena-Straße 1, 40474 Düsseldorf, Germany

Mid-November in Düsseldorf means temperatures between 3°C and 9°C (37—48°F). Cold and possibly wet. The arena is enclosed, but bring warm layers for getting to and from the venue.

The Venue: Merkur Spiel-Arena

The Merkur Spiel-Arena is a 54,600-capacity football stadium in the Stockum district, about 6 km north of the city centre. This is the first time HYROX has been held in a stadium rather than an exhibition hall — expect a louder, more electric atmosphere than any convention centre can deliver.

What's nearby:

  • Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) — about 5 minutes by car
  • Messe Düsseldorf — the exhibition centre is right next door
  • Düsseldorf city centre — 15 minutes by U-Bahn (metro)
  • Rhine River — promenades and parks along the river, 10 minutes south

Where to Stay

The arena is in a commercial/events district north of the city. Hotels near the Messe (exhibition centre) are convenient for the venue, or stay in the Altstadt (Old Town) for restaurants and nightlife with a quick metro ride to the arena.

Where to Eat

Altstadt (Old Town) — known as "die längste Theke der Welt" (the longest bar in the world). Over 260 bars and restaurants packed into a few narrow streets along the Rhine. This is where you eat and drink after the race.

Carlstadt — the quieter, more upscale neighbour to the Altstadt with independent restaurants and wine bars.

German & Düsseldorf Food to Try

  • Altbier — Düsseldorf's own top-fermented dark beer. Served in small 200ml glasses. The rivalry with Cologne's Kölsch is fierce — never order Kölsch in Düsseldorf
  • Rheinischer Sauerbraten — marinated pot roast in a sweet-sour gravy with raisins, served with dumplings and red cabbage. The classic Rhineland dish
  • Senf (mustard) — Düsseldorf is famous for its mustard. Löwensenf is the local brand. Try it on everything
  • Flammkuchen — thin-crust Alsatian pizza with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon. Perfect beer food
  • Currywurst — sliced bratwurst with curry-ketchup sauce and fries. A German street food classic

Budget eating: Bakeries (Bäckereien) sell sandwiches and pretzels for €2—4. Döner kebab shops are everywhere with meals for €5—7. Supermarkets (Aldi, REWE, Lidl) have cheap prepared meals.

Essential Düsseldorf Tips

Currency. Euro (EUR). Germany is in the eurozone.

Cash vs card. Germany is more cash-oriented than other European countries, but this is improving. Cards accepted in most hotels and restaurants. Keep €50 cash for smaller establishments and bars.

Tipping. 5—10% at restaurants. Say "Stimmt so" when paying if you want to tip the rounded amount.

Language. German. English widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.

Weather in mid-November. Highs around 9°C (48°F), lows around 3°C (37°F). Cold, grey, and potentially wet. Bring warm layers and a waterproof jacket.

Safety. Düsseldorf is very safe. Standard precautions apply.

What to See

  • Altstadt — the Old Town's 260+ bars and restaurants along the Rhine. Start at Bolkerstraße and explore
  • Rhine Tower (Rheinturm) — 240m tower with an observation deck and revolving restaurant. Panoramic views over the city and river
  • MedienHafen — the redeveloped harbour district with Frank Gehry's famous warped buildings, restaurants, and bars
  • Königsallee (Kö) — Düsseldorf's luxury shopping boulevard along a tree-lined canal
  • K21 Kunstsammlung — contemporary art museum in a stunning glass-domed building
  • Cologne — just 30 minutes by train. Visit the cathedral, the old town, and try a Kölsch (but don't tell anyone in Düsseldorf)
