HYROX Karlsruhe is a brand-new addition to the calendar — the first HYROX race ever held in this city. Messe Karlsruhe is a modern venue just south of the city in Rheinstetten, with a hotel right next door and excellent connections to Stuttgart, Frankfurt, and the rest of southwest Germany. Karlsruhe itself is an underrated city — a planned fan-shaped layout radiating from a baroque palace, strong food culture influenced by nearby France, and a genuine tech-and-culture scene that makes it worth exploring beyond the race.

Early October in Karlsruhe means temperatures between 8°C and 16°C (46–61°F). Cool autumn weather. The venue is indoors, but bring warm layers for getting to and from the Messe.

The Venue: Messe Karlsruhe

Messe Karlsruhe is one of the most modern exhibition centres in southwest Germany — 45,000 sqm of hall space with state-of-the-art facilities. It's located in Rheinstetten, about 8 km south of Karlsruhe city centre.

What's nearby:

  • Hey Lou Hotel — directly adjacent, 200m walk
  • Rheinstetten — small suburb with basic amenities
  • Karlsruhe city centre — 15 minutes by car/S-Bahn, with restaurants, bars, and cultural attractions
  • Free parking — available at the Messe for those driving

Important: The Messe is outside the city centre. If you stay at the Hey Lou Hotel next door, you're set for race day. If you stay in Karlsruhe city centre, plan 15–20 minutes of transport.

Where to Stay

Your main decision is proximity vs. atmosphere. The Hey Lou Hotel is right next to the Messe — perfect for race day. Karlsruhe city centre has more dining and nightlife options but requires transport to the venue.

Weststadt — Karlsruhe's trendy neighbourhood with independent restaurants, bars, and bakeries. Worth exploring for dinner after the race.

German & Regional Food to Try

  • Flammkuchen — thin-crust Alsatian pizza with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon. Karlsruhe's proximity to France makes this a local staple
  • Maultaschen — Swabian filled pasta, like large ravioli with meat or spinach filling. Served in broth or pan-fried
  • Schnitzel — breaded pork or veal cutlet with fries or potato salad. A German classic available everywhere
  • Käsespätzle — egg noodles baked with cheese and topped with crispy onions. The comfort food you want after a HYROX
  • Bratwurst — from market stalls and street vendors. Quick, cheap, and satisfying

Local beer: Hoepfner is Karlsruhe's own brewery — look for their beer in restaurants and bars. The Hoepfner Burgfest beer garden is worth a visit.

Budget eating: Bakeries (Bäckereien) sell sandwiches and pretzels for €2–4. Döner kebab shops are everywhere with meals for €5–7. Supermarkets (Aldi, Lidl, REWE) have cheap prepared meals.

Essential Karlsruhe Tips

Currency. Euro (EUR). Germany is in the eurozone.

Cash vs card. Germany is more cash-heavy than other European countries, but this is improving. Cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. Keep €50 in cash for smaller establishments, markets, and bakeries.

Tipping. 5–10% at restaurants. Round up for smaller amounts. Say "Stimmt so" (that's fine) when paying if you want to tip the rounded amount.

Language. German. English is widely spoken in hotels and tourist areas. In local restaurants and bakeries, basic German helps. Danke (thank you) is always appreciated.

Weather in early October. Highs around 16°C (61°F), lows around 8°C (46°F). Cool and potentially rainy. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket.

The fan shape. Karlsruhe was designed in 1715 with 32 streets radiating from the palace like a fan — one of the earliest planned cities in Europe. The layout makes navigation intuitive once you understand the concept.

Safety. Karlsruhe is very safe. Standard precautions apply.

What to See

  • Karlsruhe Palace (Schloss) — the centrepiece of the fan-shaped city, surrounded by a large park. Houses the Baden State Museum with regional history exhibits
  • ZKM Center for Art and Media — world-renowned digital art museum in a former munitions factory. Interactive installations and cutting-edge media art. One of the most important art institutions in Germany
  • Botanical Garden — adjacent to the palace, free entry, and a peaceful green space for a recovery walk
  • Turmberg Durlach — hilltop with panoramic views over the Rhine plain. Reachable by Germany's oldest funicular railway. About 20 minutes from the city centre
  • Günther-Klotz-Anlage — large urban park perfect for a shakeout run or post-race stroll
  • Baden-Baden — famous spa town just 40 minutes by train. Roman-Irish baths, thermal springs, and elegant architecture. An excellent day trip and the ultimate recovery option
