The Venue: Canton Fair Complex

The Canton Fair Complex is the world's largest exhibition centre — over 1.1 million sqm in the Pazhou district on the south bank of the Pearl River. It hosts the biannual Canton Fair, China's largest trade event.

What's nearby:

  • Pazhou metro station — Line 8, directly at the complex
  • Pearl River — waterfront promenade for walks and evening views
  • Canton Tower — Guangzhou's iconic 600m landmark, about 3 km west
  • Guangzhou city centre (Tianhe) — 20–25 minutes by metro

Important: The Pazhou area has several hotels within walking distance of the complex. It's well connected by metro to Tianhe (the main commercial district) and the old town.

Where to Stay

The Pazhou area near the Canton Fair Complex has hotels catering to trade fair visitors. Alternatively, stay in Tianhe (Guangzhou's modern centre) for more dining and nightlife — it's 20 minutes by metro.

Tianhe — modern dining district with everything from street food to fine dining. More international options.

Cantonese Food to Try

  • Dim sum (yum cha) — Guangzhou is the birthplace of dim sum. Steamer baskets of har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai, char siu bao (BBQ pork buns), and dozens more. Best at morning tea
  • Wonton noodle soup — thin egg noodles in clear broth with plump shrimp wontons. A Cantonese classic
  • Char siu — Cantonese BBQ pork, lacquered in honey and roasted until caramelised. Served over rice or in buns
  • Congee — silky rice porridge served with various toppings: century egg, pork, fish, or plain with fried dough sticks
  • Egg tarts — flaky pastry shell with smooth custard filling. Portuguese-influenced via Macau

Budget eating: Dim sum restaurants serve small plates for ¥10–25 (~$1.50–3.50). Street food is abundant and cheap. Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) have cheap prepared food.
