Mexico City is one of the world's great megacities — 22 million people, 2,240 meters above sea level, and a food scene that rivals anywhere on the planet. HYROX returns to Centro Citibanamex for a three-day race weekend at the end of October. The altitude makes every run segment hit harder, but the dry late-autumn weather and budget-friendly prices make CDMX one of the smartest HYROX trips you can book.

Late October in Mexico City means warm, dry days and cool evenings. Expect daytime highs around 22–23°C (72–73°F) and lows near 9–11°C (48–52°F). The rainy season is wrapping up, so brief afternoon showers are possible but increasingly rare. At 2,240 m (7,350 ft) elevation, the sun is intense even when air temperatures feel mild.

The Venue: Centro Citibanamex

Centro Citibanamex is Mexico City's largest convention and exhibition center, with 34,000 square metres of column-free exhibition space across four independent halls. It sits within the historic Hipódromo de las Américas racetrack complex in the Lomas de Sotelo district, on the northwest side of the city.

What's nearby:

  • Toreo Parque Central — mall with restaurants, shops, and supermarket, 5 min drive
  • Polanco — museums, dining, and nightlife, 10 min drive
  • Chapultepec Park and Castle — 15 min drive
  • Paseo de la Reforma — 10 min drive

Important: Centro Citibanamex is in the northwest of the city, not in the tourist-heavy areas like Roma, Condesa, or the Historic Center. Mexico City traffic is legendary — prioritize staying close to the venue on race day.

Where to Stay

Stay in the Toreo / Lomas de Sotelo corridor for a short race-day commute. The area has modern hotels near the Toreo Parque Central shopping complex with restaurants and supermarkets. For a luxury boutique experience, Polanco is 15–20 minutes by taxi.

Where to Eat

Toreo Parque Central — Full food court, sit-down restaurants, Chedraui supermarket, and bakeries all inside the mall near the venue.

Polanco — Home to Pujol and Quintonil (both two-Michelin-star), plus El Turix for cochinita pibil tacos at MXN 29 each.

Mexico City Food to Try

  • Tacos al pastor — Spit-roasted pork with pineapple, the city's signature street food
  • Chilaquiles — Fried tortilla chips in salsa, a breakfast staple and great morning-after-race fuel
  • Tamales — Available from street vendors early morning
  • Elote and esquites — Street corn, grilled or in a cup
  • Agua fresca — Fresh fruit water — horchata, jamaica, tamarindo

Budget eating: Street food in Mexico City is both safe and spectacular. A full meal of tacos, agua fresca, and a side rarely exceeds MXN 100 (~$5.50). Look for taco stands with long lines of locals.

Essential Mexico City Tips

Currency. Mexican Peso (MXN). 1 USD ≈ 17–18 MXN.

Cash vs card. Carry cash. Many taco stands, markets, and smaller restaurants are cash-only. ATMs are widely available (use bank ATMs inside branches).

Tipping. 10–15% at sit-down restaurants. Round up for taxis. Tip bag handlers MXN 20–50.

Language. Spanish. Learn basics: "La cuenta, por favor" (the check), "Sin picante" (no spice). Hotel and venue staff speak English.

Altitude. At 2,240 m, arrive a day or two early to acclimatize. Stay hydrated. Run splits will be slower than at sea level — this affects everyone equally.

Water. Drink bottled or purified water only. Hotels and restaurants use purified water and ice.

Safety. The Toreo, Polanco, and Reforma areas are among the safest in Mexico City. Use authorized taxis or rideshare apps.

What to See

  • Chapultepec Castle and Park — Hilltop castle overlooking the city inside one of the largest urban parks in the Western Hemisphere
  • Museo Nacional de Antropología — One of the finest museums in the world, covering Mesoamerican civilizations. Allow at least 3 hours
  • Palacio de Bellas Artes — Art Deco and Art Nouveau architecture with murals by Diego Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco
  • Teotihuacán Pyramids — Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, 50 km northeast. A must-do day trip
  • Roma and Condesa — Tree-lined streets, independent coffee shops, and some of the best casual dining in the city
  • Coyoacán and the Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul) — The iconic blue house where Frida Kahlo lived. Book tickets online in advance
