Altitude Warning

Salt Lake City sits at 4,226 feet (1,288 m) above sea level. This matters for HYROX.

  • Expect a 6–8% decrease in endurance performance compared to sea level
  • Running stations and the SkiErg will feel noticeably harder
  • Mild breathlessness during intense efforts is normal
  • Hydrate aggressively — dry air plus altitude increases dehydration risk significantly
  • Arrive 2–3 days early if possible for basic acclimatization
  • Race strategy: Start conservatively, especially the first running station. Altitude hits harder in the second half

The Venue: Salt Palace Convention Center

Salt Palace is downtown Salt Lake City's main convention centre, right in the centre of the city. It's connected to one hotel via skybridge and within walking distance of everything downtown.

  • Utah scones — not British scones: fluffy fried dough served with honey butter. Great post-race treat
  • Craft beer — SLC has a thriving craft beer scene. Try Wasatch Brewery or Epic Brewing

Budget eating: City Creek Center food court has solid options. Grocery stores (Smith's, Whole Foods) have prepared meals. Downtown has plenty of fast-casual spots under $15.

Cash vs card. Cards accepted everywhere. Contactless works widely.

Language. English.

Weather in September. Highs 25°C (77°F), lows 11°C (52°F). Dry, clear skies, 9–12 hours of sunshine. Almost no rain. Pack layers — the 15°C temperature swing between morning and afternoon is significant. Sunscreen essential — the high altitude means stronger UV.

Altitude. 4,226 ft. Drink 50% more water than normal. Avoid alcohol the first night. Arrive early if possible.

Dry air. Bring lip balm and moisturiser. The low humidity dries out skin and airways quickly.

Free downtown transit. TRAX Free Fare Zone covers all of downtown — travel between hotels and the venue costs nothing.

Alcohol. Utah has relaxed many old laws. Beer, wine, and spirits available at restaurants and bars. Grocery stores sell beer up to 5% ABV. Stronger drinks at state liquor stores.

Safety. Downtown SLC is safe and well-patrolled, especially the convention center/Temple Square/City Creek area.

What to See

  • Temple Square — 3-minute walk from the venue. Salt Lake Temple, Tabernacle (famous acoustics), gardens. Free tours and weekend concerts
  • Big Cottonwood & Little Cottonwood Canyons — 25–35 min by car. Stunning Wasatch Range mountain scenery, hiking trails. Ride the Snowbird tram for panoramic views. Fall colours may be starting in September
  • Great Salt Lake & Antelope Island — 40 min by car. Largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. Float in the salty water, see bison and antelope on the island
  • Natural History Museum of Utah — 10 min by car. World's largest collection of horned dinosaur fossils. Stunning architecture with valley views
  • Park City — 35 min by car. 2002 Winter Olympics venue, historic Main Street, Utah Olympic Park (bobsled rides, zip lines). Perfect September hiking and mountain biking
  • Red Butte Garden — 10 min by car. Botanical garden at the University of Utah with Wasatch Mountain views. Great for a recovery walk
