The Venue: KINTEX

KINTEX is South Korea's largest convention and exhibition centre — over 108,000 sqm of event space in Goyang, about 20 km northwest of central Seoul. It's accessible by metro (Line 3) and bus.

What's nearby:

  • Ilsan Lake Park — 8 minutes' walk, a beautiful park for a pre-race walk
  • KINTEX shopping area — restaurants and shops within walking distance
  • Goyang city centre — small but with dining options
  • Seoul city centre — about 45—60 minutes by metro

Important: KINTEX is not in central Seoul — it's in Goyang city. Hotels near the venue are limited but convenient. If you stay in Seoul, plan for a 45—60 minute metro commute on race day.

Where to Stay

Stay near KINTEX for race-day convenience, or in central Seoul for the full experience. The metro connection to KINTEX takes about 45—60 minutes from central Seoul. Hotels near the venue are limited to a few options but are well-suited for a race weekend.

Where to Eat

Near KINTEX: The Ilsan area has Korean BBQ restaurants, noodle shops, and convenience store meals — practical but not destination-level dining.

In Seoul: The real food scene. Myeongdong has street food stalls. Gwangjang Market is legendary for street food. Gangnam and Itaewon have international dining options.

Korean Food to Try

  • Korean BBQ — grill your own beef (galbi), pork belly (samgyeopsal), or chicken at the table. Comes with unlimited banchan (side dishes). The essential Korean food experience
  • Bibimbap — rice bowl topped with vegetables, egg, chili paste, and optional meat. Mix everything together and eat
  • Tteokbokki — chewy rice cakes in a spicy red sauce. The most popular Korean street food
  • Kimchi jjigae — spicy fermented cabbage stew with pork and tofu. Warming and perfect for cold weather
  • Hotteok — sweet filled pancake with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts. A winter street food favourite

Budget eating: South Korea is incredibly affordable for food. Street food meals cost ₩3,000—5,000 ($2—4). Convenience stores (GS25, CU) have excellent prepared meals, kimbap, and ramen for ₩2,000—4,000 ($1.50—3).

Essential Seoul Tips

Currency. South Korean Won (KRW/₩). 1 USD ≈ 1,370 ₩, 1 EUR ≈ 1,510 ₩.

Cash vs card. Cards accepted almost everywhere. Contactless works widely. Keep some cash for market stalls and small restaurants.

Tipping. Not expected or customary in South Korea. Do not tip at restaurants — it can cause confusion.

Language. Korean. English signage is common in Seoul, but conversational English is limited outside tourist areas. Download Papago (Korean translation app) — it's better than Google Translate for Korean.

Weather in mid-November. Highs around 11°C (52°F), lows around 1°C (34°F). Cold, dry, and clear. Bring warm layers, a winter jacket, and gloves.

Safety. South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world. You can walk anywhere at any time of day or night.

What to See

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace — the grandest of Seoul's five royal palaces. Watch the changing of the guard ceremony and rent a hanbok (traditional dress) for free entry
  • Bukchon Hanok Village — traditional Korean houses on narrow hillside streets between two palaces. Beautiful for walking and photography
  • Myeongdong — Seoul's shopping and street food capital. K-beauty shops, fashion, and endless food stalls
  • Gwangjang Market — Seoul's oldest traditional market. Bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes), mayak kimbap, and raw beef tartare (yukhoe)
  • Namsan Tower (N Seoul Tower) — iconic tower on Namsan mountain with 360° views of Seoul. Take the cable car up
  • DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) — the border between North and South Korea. Tours run daily from Seoul — a sobering and fascinating experience
