HYROX Utrecht takes place at Jaarbeurs — the city's main exhibition centre, directly next to Utrecht Centraal station. That means you step off the train and you're at the venue. Utrecht is the Netherlands' fourth-largest city but arguably its most charming — medieval canals with sunken wharves, cosy cafes, and a university town atmosphere. Smaller and less touristy than Amsterdam, but just as beautiful and significantly cheaper.

The Venue: Jaarbeurs Utrecht
Jaarbeurs is one of the largest exhibition centres in the Netherlands — right next to Utrecht Centraal station in the Jaarbeurs district on the west side of the city centre. It hosts major trade fairs and events year-round.
What's nearby:
- Utrecht Centraal station — literally next door, 3-minute walk
- Hoog Catharijne — large shopping mall connecting the station to the city centre
- Utrecht city centre — 10-minute walk through Hoog Catharijne to the historic canals
- TivoliVredenburg — major music venue adjacent to the station
Important: Jaarbeurs is one of the best-connected HYROX venues in Europe. Utrecht Centraal is a major rail hub — trains from Amsterdam take 27 minutes, from Schiphol Airport 37 minutes.
Where to Stay
Utrecht's city centre is compact and walkable. Hotels near the station are closest to the venue, while hotels on the canals offer the best atmosphere. Everything is within 15 minutes on foot.
NH Utrecht — Closest to Venue
4-star hotel at Jaarbeursplein, directly adjacent to Jaarbeurs and the station. Modern rooms, restaurant, and bar. Walk to the venue in 2 minutes. The most convenient option.
Karel V Hotel — Best in City Centre
5-star boutique hotel in a 14th-century monastery in the heart of the old town. Spa, restaurant, and historic atmosphere. About 12 minutes' walk to the venue. Utrecht's finest hotel.
Star Lodge Hotels Utrecht — Budget Pick
3-star hotel about 10 minutes from the station. Clean, modern rooms and good value. One of the most affordable options in Utrecht with easy access to both the venue and city centre.
Getting There
From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS)
Schiphol is about 45 km northwest — but the direct train makes it feel much closer.
| Option | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct train | 37 min | €10–15 | Frequent service, runs every 10–15 min |
| Taxi/Uber | ~40 min | €80–100 | Traffic dependent |
The direct train from Schiphol to Utrecht Centraal runs every 10–15 minutes. This is by far the best option. The venue is next to the station.
Public Transport
Utrecht's transport is run by U-OV (buses and trams). But the city centre is so compact that most visitors walk everywhere.
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| OV-chipkaart (single use) | €1.08 base + per km |
| Day pass | ~€8 |
Use an OV-chipkaart or contactless bank card on buses and trams. But honestly, you can walk to most things in Utrecht.
Where to Eat
Oudegracht — Utrecht's iconic main canal with unique sunken wharves (werfkelders) converted into restaurants and cafes. Dine at water level below the street — uniquely Utrecht.
Voorstraat & Twijnstraat — streets in the old town packed with independent restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops.
Dutch & Utrecht Food to Try
- Bitterballen — crispy deep-fried meatball ragout balls, served with mustard. The essential Dutch bar snack
- Stroopwafel — two thin waffles with caramel syrup between them. Best fresh from market stalls
- Kaas (cheese) — the Netherlands is cheese country. Try aged Gouda, young Gouda, and Oude Amsterdam
- Stamppot — mashed potatoes with vegetables (kale, sauerkraut, or carrots) and a smoked sausage. Classic Dutch winter comfort food
- Poffertjes — tiny fluffy Dutch pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar
Budget eating: Febo is a Dutch fast-food chain with vending-machine-style croquettes. Market stalls on Saturdays sell fresh food. Indonesian restaurants (a Dutch tradition) serve rijsttafel for €12–18.
Essential Utrecht Tips
Currency. Euro (EUR). The Netherlands is in the eurozone.
Cash vs card. Cards accepted everywhere. Contactless (including Maestro and Visa) is standard. Very few places are cash-only.
Tipping. Not required. Rounding up or adding 5–10% at restaurants is polite but not expected.
Language. Dutch. But virtually everyone speaks fluent English — the Netherlands has some of the highest English proficiency in the world. You'll have zero language issues.
Weather in late November. Highs around 7°C (45°F), lows around 2°C (36°F). Cold, grey, possibly rainy. Bring warm layers and waterproof jacket.
Safety. Utrecht is very safe. Standard precautions apply.
