HYROX Vancouver lands at the Vancouver Convention Centre — a stunning waterfront venue on Canada Place where the mountains of the North Shore meet the waters of Coal Harbour. Vancouver in December is mild by Canadian standards, with temperatures hovering just above freezing and rain far more likely than snow. The city's food scene is shaped by its Pacific Rim location, with some of the best sushi, dim sum, and seafood in North America. Between the mountains, ocean, and one of the world's great urban parks, there's plenty to fill a long weekend beyond race day.

Mid-December in Vancouver means highs around 6°C (43°F) and lows around 2°C (36°F). It's one of Canada's mildest cities in winter, but expect rain — Vancouver earns its "Raincouver" nickname in December. The venue is indoors, but pack waterproof layers for everything outside the convention centre doors.
The Venue: Vancouver Convention Centre
The Vancouver Convention Centre is a world-class waterfront facility at Canada Place, right on the edge of Coal Harbour. Its iconic sail-shaped roof is one of the most recognisable landmarks on the Vancouver skyline. The centre hosted media and events during the 2010 Winter Olympics and regularly hosts major international conventions. With over 40,000 sqm of event space across two buildings connected by a walkway, there's plenty of room for the HYROX course.
What's nearby:
- Canada Place — iconic waterfront landmark with its distinctive white sails, cruise ship terminal, and FlyOver Canada attraction
- Gastown — Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood with cobblestone streets, the famous steam clock, and independent restaurants. A 5-minute walk east
- Stanley Park — one of the world's great urban parks, a 10-minute walk along the Seawall from the venue
- Waterfront Station — SkyTrain and SeaBus terminal, 3-minute walk south
Important: The venue sits right on the downtown waterfront, making it one of the most walkable HYROX locations on the calendar. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs directly from the airport to Waterfront Station, putting you 3 minutes on foot from the convention centre door.
Where to Stay
Downtown Vancouver is compact and extremely walkable. The convention centre sits on the waterfront at the northern edge of downtown, with hotels clustered within a 5–15 minute walk. The SkyTrain connects the airport directly, so you don't need a car.
Fairmont Waterfront — Top Pick
4-star hotel adjacent to the convention centre with direct harbour views over Coal Harbour and the North Shore mountains. Heated outdoor pool, full-service spa, and the ARC restaurant sourcing ingredients from the hotel's rooftop herb garden. You can walk to the venue in under 5 minutes, and the Seawall running path starts right outside for a pre-race shakeout. The race-day convenience pick.
Pan Pacific Vancouver — Connected to Venue
Luxury hotel built right into Canada Place, physically connected to the convention centre. Harbour and mountain views from upper floors, heated outdoor pool, spa, and multiple dining options. This is as close to the venue as you can get — you're essentially already there. Premium option for those who want zero commute on race morning.
Victorian Hotel — Best Value
A boutique budget hotel in the heart of Gastown, Vancouver's oldest and most characterful neighbourhood. The building dates from 1898 and has been carefully maintained with period charm. About a 10-minute walk to the convention centre through Gastown's cobblestone streets. No-frills rooms, but the location and price make it the smart pick if you'd rather spend your money on Vancouver's food scene.
Getting There
From Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
YVR is about 15 km south of downtown, located on Sea Island in the suburb of Richmond.
| Option | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Line (SkyTrain) | ~25 min | $9.30 CAD | Direct to Waterfront Station |
| Taxi | ~25 min | $35–45 CAD | Traffic dependent |
| Uber/Lyft | ~25 min | $25–35 CAD | Available |
The Canada Line is the easiest option — trains run every 3–6 minutes and take you directly from YVR to Waterfront Station, which is a 3-minute walk from the convention centre. No transfers needed.
Public Transport
Vancouver's transport is run by TransLink (SkyTrain, buses, SeaBus).
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Single zone (Compass) | $3.15 CAD |
| Day pass | $11.25 CAD |
Pick up a Compass Card at any SkyTrain station — it works on all TransLink services. The Canada Line runs directly from YVR to Waterfront Station, 3 minutes from the venue. The SeaBus from Waterfront Station crosses to North Vancouver in 12 minutes if you want to visit Capilano or Grouse Mountain.
Where to Eat
Gastown — cobblestone streets with restaurants, cocktail bars, and coffee shops. Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood with a modern food scene. Five minutes on foot from the convention centre.
Granville Island Public Market — indoor market with fresh seafood, produce, bakeries, and prepared food. Take the Aquabus mini-ferry from downtown — a short, scenic ride across False Creek.
Vancouver Food to Try
- Sushi & Japanese food — Vancouver has some of the best sushi outside Japan. Fresh Pacific seafood and a huge Japanese-Canadian community mean quality and variety you won't find in most North American cities
- Salmon — wild Pacific salmon: smoked, grilled, or in chowder. Try First Nations-style alder-smoked salmon for something uniquely West Coast
- Japadog — Japanese-inspired hot dogs with teriyaki, seaweed, and Japanese mayo. A Vancouver street food icon that started as a food cart and became a cultural institution
- Dim sum — Richmond (near the airport) has the best dim sum in North America. Worth a detour on your way to or from YVR
- Poutine — Canadian classic: fries, cheese curds, and gravy. Vancouver adds its own twists with pulled pork, kimchi, or truffle
Budget eating: Asian food courts in Richmond serve meals for $8–12 CAD. Food trucks downtown for $10–15 CAD. Supermarkets (Save-On-Foods, T&T Supermarket) have excellent prepared food — T&T in particular has a huge hot food section with Asian dishes.
Essential Vancouver Tips
Currency. Canadian Dollar (CAD). 1 USD ≈ 1.36 CAD, 1 EUR ≈ 1.50 CAD.
Cash vs card. Contactless and cards accepted everywhere. You rarely need cash.
Tipping. 15–20% at restaurants — standard in Canada. Tip on the pre-tax amount.
Language. English. French is Canada's other official language but rarely used in Vancouver. Mandarin and Cantonese widely spoken, especially in Richmond and the eastern suburbs.
Weather in mid-December. Highs around 6°C (43°F), lows around 2°C (36°F). Mild by Canadian standards but rainy. Bring waterproof layers — a good rain jacket is more useful than a heavy winter coat. Snow is rare downtown.
Safety. Downtown Vancouver is generally safe. The Downtown Eastside (Hastings Street east of Gastown) has visible homelessness and drug use — walk through with awareness, especially at night.
What to See
- Stanley Park — 400-hectare urban park with the Seawall, totem poles, beaches, and Vancouver Aquarium. One of the world's great urban parks and a perfect recovery-day walk or run
- Capilano Suspension Bridge — 140m bridge swaying 70m above the Capilano River in the North Shore rainforest. Treetops Adventure and cliff walk included with entry
- Granville Island — public market, artisan studios, breweries, and waterfront dining. Take the Aquabus from downtown for a scenic mini-ferry ride across False Creek
- Grouse Mountain — "Peak of Vancouver." Gondola up for views, skating, and holiday lights in December. The Christmas light display is one of the best in the city
- Gastown — steam clock, cobblestone streets, boutiques, and restaurants in Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood. Atmospheric and walkable from the venue
- Vancouver Christmas Market — German-inspired Christmas market at Jack Poole Plaza, right next to the convention centre. Runs through December with mulled wine, European food stalls, and artisan gifts
