Getting There
From Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU)
Chengdu's new airport (opened 2021) is approximately 60 km southeast of the city centre. It's further out than the old Shuangliu airport, so plan your transfer time accordingly.

The metro is the most reliable option — Line 18 runs from Tianfu Airport directly into the city, and Line 1 connects to Century City. Trains run every 5--10 minutes. Download Didi (China's ride-hailing app) as a backup.

Where to Eat
Jinli Ancient Street — a restored traditional street near the Wuhou Shrine with Sichuan snack stalls, tea houses, and handicraft shops. Touristy but atmospheric and genuinely tasty.
Yulin neighbourhood — a local residential area south of the city centre packed with family-run Sichuan restaurants, barbecue spots, and late-night noodle shops. This is where Chengdu locals eat.
Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys) — three restored Qing dynasty alleys with restaurants, bars, and cafes. More polished than Jinli, with a good mix of traditional and modern dining.
Chengdu Food to Try
- Hotpot (huoguo) — Chengdu's most iconic meal. A bubbling pot of chilli-oil broth at the centre of the table. Dip raw meat, vegetables, and tofu into the boiling broth. Order the "yuan-yang" (split pot) for half-spicy, half-mild. Prepare to sweat
- Mapo tofu — soft tofu in a fiery sauce of chilli bean paste, fermented black beans, minced pork, and Sichuan peppercorn. Created in Chengdu in the 1860s. The numbing-spicy (mala) sensation is the signature of Sichuan cuisine
- Dan dan noodles (dan dan mian) — thin wheat noodles in a spicy, nutty sauce with minced pork and preserved vegetables. A street food staple
- Kung Pao chicken (gong bao ji ding) — diced chicken stir-fried with peanuts, chillies, and Sichuan peppercorn. The original Sichuan version is drier and more intensely flavoured than Western adaptations
- Sichuan cold noodles (liang mian) — chilled noodles dressed with chilli oil, garlic, vinegar, and sesame paste. Perfect for hot summer days
- Rabbit head — Chengdu's adventurous signature snack. Braised or spiced, sold at street stalls. Not for everyone, but very much a local experience
Budget eating: Street food throughout the city costs CN\u00a55--15 per item. Small restaurants serve rice dishes for CN\u00a515--30. A hotpot meal for two at a local restaurant costs CN\u00a5100--200 total. Chengdu is one of the most affordable food cities in China.
Essential Chengdu Tips
Currency. Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY / CN\u00a5).
Cash vs card. Mobile payment (WeChat Pay, Alipay) is the standard for nearly everything. International visitors can link foreign cards to Alipay. Cash is accepted at most places but is increasingly uncommon for daily transactions. Set up mobile payment before you arrive.
Tipping. Not customary in China. Do not tip at restaurants, in taxis, or at hotels.
Language. Mandarin Chinese (with a strong local Sichuan dialect). English is very limited outside international hotels. Download a translation app and have your hotel address written in Chinese characters for taxi drivers. Hotel reception at international chains will speak English.

- Wuhou Shrine — a temple complex dedicated to Zhuge Liang and the heroes of the Three Kingdoms period. Beautiful gardens and peaceful grounds. Adjacent to Jinli Ancient Street
- Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys) — three restored Qing dynasty lanes with teahouses, Sichuan opera performances (face-changing), craft shops, and restaurants
- People's Park — Chengdu's central park where locals practice tai chi, dance, and drink tea. Visit the Heming Teahouse for bamboo-chair tea service and people-watching — a quintessential Chengdu experience
- Leshan Giant Buddha — the world's largest stone Buddha (71 metres tall), carved into a cliff face. A UNESCO World Heritage Site about 2 hours from Chengdu by high-speed train. Worth a day trip
- Mount Qingcheng — one of the birthplaces of Taoism, with ancient temples set in misty, forested mountains. About 1 hour from Chengdu by high-speed train
