Metro Line 11 connects the airport, the convention center area (Huilongtai station), and the city centre. Alipay or WeChat Pay can be used for metro fares via QR code — set these up before arriving in China if possible.

Bao'an area — the neighbourhood around the convention center has local Cantonese restaurants, noodle shops, and food courts. Authentic and affordable, though less cosmopolitan than central Shenzhen.
Sea World (Shekou) — Shenzhen's most popular waterfront dining and nightlife area, about 25 minutes from the venue. International restaurants, bars, and a lively evening atmosphere.
Futian / Huaqiangbei — central Shenzhen's commercial heart with every type of Chinese cuisine, from upscale Cantonese to hole-in-the-wall noodle shops.

- Dim sum — Shenzhen is in Guangdong province, the birthplace of dim sum. Har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai, char siu bao (BBQ pork buns), and cheung fun (rice noodle rolls) are essential
- Roast goose — Cantonese roast goose with crispy skin and rich flavour. A regional speciality far superior to most roast duck
- Wonton noodles — thin egg noodles in clear broth with shrimp-filled wontons. A Cantonese classic found on every corner
- Claypot rice — rice cooked in a clay pot with Chinese sausage, mushrooms, and dark soy sauce. The crispy rice crust at the bottom is the best part
- Hakka stuffed tofu — Shenzhen has a large Hakka population. Firm tofu stuffed with minced pork and braised in sauce — a regional speciality
- Milk tea — Shenzhen's bubble tea and milk tea scene is enormous. Heytea (founded in neighbouring Guangdong) is a local favourite
Budget eating: Shenzhen is excellent value for food. Food court meals cost ¥20—40 ($2.80—5.60). Street-side noodle and rice dishes cost ¥15—30 ($2—4.20). Dim sum restaurants range from ¥50—150 (~$7—21) per person depending on the venue.
Essential Shenzhen Tips
Currency. Chinese Yuan / Renminbi (CNY/¥).
Cash vs card. China operates primarily on mobile payment (Alipay and WeChat Pay). International credit cards are increasingly accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but many everyday transactions require mobile payment. Set up Alipay (which now supports international credit cards) before you arrive. Carry some cash as backup — ATMs at Bank of China and ICBC accept international cards.
Tipping. Tipping is not expected in China. It is not part of the culture. Do not tip at restaurants, hotels, or in taxis.
Language. Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. English is very limited outside international hotels. Google services are blocked in China — download a VPN before arrival, or use Baidu Maps and a translation app. Learn "xie xie" (thank you) and "ni hao" (hello).
