Frankfurt am Main is Germany's financial capital and one of Europe's most connected cities. The skyline of glass towers earns it the nickname "Mainhattan," but beyond the banks there's a surprisingly traditional side — half-timbered squares, apple wine taverns, and one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets. Messe Frankfurt is one of the largest trade fair grounds in the world, hosting everything from the Frankfurt Book Fair to Musikmesse, and in December 2026 it hosts HYROX. Race weekend falls right in the middle of Christmas market season, so you get a world-class fitness event and Glühwein in the same trip.

December in Frankfurt is cold. Expect highs around 5°C (41°F) and lows near 0°C (32°F), with grey skies, possible fog, and occasional rain or sleet. The venue is indoors, but you'll want serious layers for walking between the hotel, transit stops, and Christmas markets.

The Venue: Messe Frankfurt

Messe Frankfurt is one of the world's largest exhibition centres — over 400,000 square metres of hall space spread across the western edge of the city. It hosts some of the biggest trade fairs on the planet, including the Frankfurt Book Fair, Automechanika, and Musikmesse. HYROX takes place in Hall 1, a modern, purpose-built exhibition hall with excellent facilities and easy access from public transport.

The Messe grounds sit in the Gallus/Westend area, about 2 km west of the city centre and the main train station. It's a well-connected location with S-Bahn, tram, and bus lines running directly to the venue.

What's nearby:

  • Festhalle Frankfurt — iconic domed hall on Messe grounds, hosts concerts and major events
  • Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof — main train station, 10 minutes by tram
  • Frankfurt city centre (Römerberg) — 15 minutes by tram/U-Bahn
  • Messe Frankfurt S-Bahn station — direct access to the venue

Important: The Messe is west of the city centre, not in the middle of it. This is actually an advantage — the area has plenty of hotels geared toward trade fair visitors, public transport connections are excellent, and you avoid the congestion of the inner city. Many athletes will be able to walk to the venue from nearby hotels.

Where to Stay

The Messe area has a high concentration of hotels built to serve the trade fair industry, which means good availability, professional service, and easy venue access. Book early — December events at the Messe fill nearby hotels quickly, and Christmas market tourism adds extra demand.

Over 500 rooms, a restaurant, pool, and fitness centre. The hotel is built for trade fair visitors, so it handles large events smoothly. Walk to the venue in under 5 minutes. The top choice if convenience is your priority.

NH Frankfurt Messe — Near Venue Pick

A modern 4-star hotel near the Messe with clean, contemporary rooms and a professional setup. Restaurant and bar on-site. A short walk or one tram stop from the venue. NH hotels are reliable across Europe — you know what you're getting. Good balance of quality and location.

Motel One is Germany's best budget design hotel chain — stylish rooms, quality bedding, and a good bar, all at a price that undercuts the 4-star competition significantly. This location is near the Messe with easy access to the venue and city centre. Rooms are compact but well-designed. The pick if you want to save money without sacrificing comfort or location.

Getting There

From Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Frankfurt Airport is one of Europe's busiest and best-connected airports, with direct flights from almost everywhere. It sits about 12 km southwest of the Messe, and the transport links are fast and frequent.

The Messe is served by the Messe Frankfurt S-Bahn station and several tram lines. From the Hauptbahnhof, trams 16 and 17 reach the Messe in about 10 minutes. From the city centre (Konstablerwache or Hauptwache), take the S-Bahn or a combination of U-Bahn and tram. Buy tickets from machines at stops or use the RMV app.

Where to Eat

Sachsenhausen — Frankfurt's traditional quarter south of the river. Apple wine taverns, traditional restaurants, and a lively atmosphere. This is where locals go for a proper Frankfurt evening — wooden benches, hearty food, and Apfelwein served from a Bembel.

Kleinmarkthalle — covered food market with German and international vendors. Fresh produce, sausages, cheese, and prepared food. Open Monday to Saturday. A great stop for lunch or to pick up snacks before race day.

Frankfurt Food to Try

  • Handkäse mit Musik — translucent sour milk cheese marinated in vinegar, oil, and onions. An acquired taste but quintessentially Frankfurt
  • Grüne Soße — Frankfurt's famous green sauce — seven fresh herbs blended with sour cream and eggs. Served with potatoes and boiled eggs
  • Frankfurter Rippchen — cured pork chop served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes
  • Apfelwein (Ebbelwoi) — Frankfurt's traditional apple wine, served from a Bembel (stoneware jug) in traditional taverns in Sachsenhausen
  • Frankfurter Würstchen — the original Frankfurt sausage. Thin smoked pork sausage, traditionally served in pairs with bread and mustard

Budget eating: Traditional apple wine taverns serve hearty meals for €10–15. Kleinmarkthalle has food stalls with meals for €5–10. Christmas market food is everywhere in December.

Essential Frankfurt Tips

Currency. Euro (EUR).

Cash vs card. Germany is more cash-friendly than other European countries. Many restaurants and smaller shops prefer cash. Keep €30–50 on hand.

Tipping. Round up or add 5–10% at restaurants. Say the total amount when paying.

Language. German. English widely spoken in the city centre and business areas.

Weather in December. Highs around 5°C (41°F), lows around 0°C (32°F). Cold, possibly foggy or wet. Bring warm layers.

Safety. Frankfurt is generally safe. The Bahnhofsviertel (station district) can be rough — use normal caution there.

What to See

  • Römerberg — Frankfurt's medieval town square with half-timbered buildings. The Christmas market here is one of Germany's most beautiful
  • Main Tower — the only Frankfurt skyscraper with a public observation deck. Views over the skyline and river
  • Städel Museum — one of Germany's most important art museums with works from the 14th century to present
  • Palmengarten — large botanical garden with tropical greenhouses. A green escape in winter
  • Sachsenhausen — traditional quarter with apple wine taverns, Museum Embankment, and the Eiserner Steg bridge
  • Frankfurt Christmas Market — one of Germany's oldest and largest, centred on Römerberg. Late November through December
