HYROX Milan takes place at Fiera Milano in Rho — one of Europe's largest exhibition complexes, about 14 km northwest of Milan's city centre. Milan is Italy's most cosmopolitan city — the capital of fashion, design, and finance, with a food scene that goes far beyond pizza and pasta (though those are outstanding too). A December race weekend here means Christmas markets, panettone, and aperitivo culture at its finest.

Early December in Milan means temperatures between 1°C and 7°C (34–45°F). Cold, foggy, and possibly wet. The venue is indoors, but bring warm layers. The city's Christmas decorations and markets will be in full swing.

The Venue: Fiera Milano

Fiera Milano is one of the world's largest exhibition centres — over 345,000 sqm of indoor space in the commune of Rho, about 14 km northwest of central Milan. It hosts the Salone del Mobile (furniture fair) and major international events.

What's nearby:

  • Rho Fiera Milano metro station — Line M1, right at the entrance
  • Rho — town centre with some restaurants and shops
  • Milan city centre — 30–40 minutes by metro Line M1
  • Malpensa Airport — about 40 km northwest

Important: Fiera Milano is outside the city. There are a few hotels near the fairgrounds, but most visitors stay in central Milan and take the metro. Line M1 runs directly from the Duomo to Rho Fiera Milano.

Where to Stay

Central Milan is the best base — it has the restaurants, the atmosphere, and the metro takes you directly to the venue. Near the venue, options are limited but practical for race-day convenience.

Where to Eat

Navigli district — Milan's canal neighbourhood with restaurants, bars, and aperitivo culture. The best area for a pre-race dinner or post-race celebration.

Brera — bohemian neighbourhood near Pinacoteca di Brera with upscale restaurants, wine bars, and galleries.

Milanese Food to Try

  • Risotto alla Milanese — creamy saffron risotto with bone marrow. Milan's signature dish — golden, rich, and indulgent
  • Cotoletta alla Milanese — bone-in veal cutlet, breaded and pan-fried in butter. The original Wiener schnitzel
  • Aperitivo — Milan invented happy hour Italian-style. Buy a drink (Aperol Spritz, Negroni Sbagliato) and get access to a free buffet of food. Standard from 6–9 PM
  • Panettone — the tall, dome-shaped Christmas cake with candied fruit and raisins. December is peak panettone season — try artisan versions from bakeries
  • Ossobuco — braised veal shank in white wine, broth, and gremolata. Often served with risotto alla Milanese

Budget eating: Aperitivo is the best deal in Milan — a €8–10 drink comes with a substantial buffet. Pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) costs €3–5. Supermarkets (Esselunga, Carrefour) have good prepared food.

Essential Milan Tips

Currency. Euro (EUR). Italy is in the eurozone.

Cash vs card. Cards accepted at most places. Some small trattorias and market stalls prefer cash. Keep €20–30 on hand.

Tipping. Not expected. A coperto (cover charge) of €1–3 is added to restaurant bills automatically. Rounding up is polite.

Language. Italian. English is spoken in hotels and tourist areas but less widely than in northern Europe. Grazie (thank you) goes a long way.

Weather in early December. Highs around 7°C (45°F), lows around 1°C (34°F). Cold and foggy. Milan winters are grey. Bring warm layers.

Safety. Milan is generally safe. Watch for pickpockets near the Duomo, on the metro, and at Centrale station.
