Brazilian Food to Try

  • Coxinha — deep-fried chicken croquette shaped like a drumstick. Available at every bakery and bar. The quintessential São Paulo snack
  • Feijoada — black bean and pork stew served with rice, farofa (toasted cassava flour), and orange slices. Brazil's national dish, traditionally eaten on Saturdays
  • Pastel — crispy deep-fried pastry filled with cheese, meat, or palm hearts. Best at markets and street fairs
  • Pão de queijo — cheese bread rolls made with tapioca flour. Addictive and available everywhere
  • Açaí bowl — frozen açaí berry pulp topped with granola and banana. The perfect recovery meal

Budget eating: Bakeries (padarias) are on every corner with sandwiches, pastries, and coffee for R$10—20 ($2—4). Many restaurants offer a prato feito (fixed plate) lunch for R$20—30 ($4—6).

Essential São Paulo Tips

Currency. Brazilian Real (BRL/R$). 1 USD ≈ 5.00 R$, 1 EUR ≈ 5.50 R$.

Cash vs card. Cards accepted in most restaurants and shops. Contactless (PIX) is widely used. Keep some cash for street food and small establishments.

Tipping. Most restaurants add a 10% service charge (gorjeta) to the bill. You can choose to pay it or not — it's technically optional.

Language. Portuguese. English is limited outside international hotels. Basic Portuguese or a translation app is very helpful. Obrigado/Obrigada (thank you) is essential.

Weather in mid-October. Highs around 26°C (79°F), lows around 16°C (61°F). Spring weather with afternoon rain showers possible.

Safety. São Paulo requires awareness. Avoid displaying expensive items, use ride-hailing apps instead of walking alone at night, and stay in well-lit, busy areas. Tourist neighbourhoods (Paulista, Vila Madalena, Jardins) are generally safe during the day.

What to See

  • Paulista Avenue (Avenida Paulista) — São Paulo's main boulevard, closed to cars on Sundays. Museums, street performers, and cultural institutions line the avenue
  • MASP (São Paulo Museum of Art) — iconic modernist building with the best art collection in Latin America. Free on Tuesdays
  • Ibirapuera Park — São Paulo's Central Park. Running paths, lakes, museums, and green space in the heart of the city. Perfect for a recovery jog
  • Vila Madalena — colourful neighbourhood with Beco do Batman (Batman Alley), covered in street art
  • Pinacoteca do Estado — beautiful fine arts museum in a 19th-century building surrounded by Jardim da Luz park
  • Liberdade — the Japanese-Brazilian neighbourhood with Asian restaurants, shops, and a weekend street market
