Essential Shanghai Tips
Currency. Chinese Yuan/Renminbi (CNY/¥). 1 USD ≈ 7.10 ¥, 1 EUR ≈ 7.80 ¥.
Cash vs card. China runs on mobile payment (Alipay and WeChat Pay). International visitors can now link foreign credit cards to Alipay. Some places don't accept cash or foreign cards — set up Alipay before you arrive.
Tipping. Not expected or customary in China. No need to tip at restaurants, taxis, or hotels.
Language. Mandarin Chinese. English is limited outside international hotels and tourist attractions. Download a translation app. Xièxie (sheh-sheh, thank you) is useful.
VPN. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western social media are blocked in China. Download a VPN before you arrive.
Weather in late October. Highs around 22°C (72°F), lows around 14°C (57°F). Pleasant autumn weather. Bring a light jacket.
Safety. Shanghai is extremely safe, even at night. Petty theft is rare.
